High Representative in BiH Christian Schmidt is attending the 28th anniversary of the genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica, at the Potocari Memorial Centre where he announced that he has concrete measures for the perpetrators, as well as the victims of genocide.
“Srebrenica evokes very personal emotions in me. Nowhere in the world is genocide felt so directly. We have a crisis on the one hand, and on the other hand, there are people who are afraid, insecure and worried. They too must be assured that never again will young men from Srebrenica cross the mountains and forests to reach Tuzla to save their lives. I am trying to tell the International Community that there must be a strong peace and that it must be preserved by all means. We have a crisis right now because there are a few people in the Republika Srpska (RS) who work for themselves, I don't know what they are doing, but they are not bringing anything good to their people. We have prepared several things and I think we have made it clear that it will not be possible to continue like this. This is not a quarrel between RS President Milorad Dodik and Schmidt – it is the task of the International Community from Dayton and all those who want to serve Dayton and help it and show that they are principled,” Schmidt said.
Asked to comment on the increasing glorification of war criminals and genocide, despite former High Representative Valentin Inzko imposing a ban and punishment for denying the genocide in BiH Schmidt said he made concrete steps in this direction.
“Today and for the next few days, I have invited the Chief State Prosecutor from Bavaria with his female colleagues who are heads of the department, and they will work with the local Chief State Prosecutor to support him, and to tell him from their own experience how and in what manner to act against such people. I will watch how the process proceeds and I want to close certain gaps that have existed so far,” said Schmidt.
