In a recent interview, renowned historian Margaret MacMillan, professor emeritus at the University of Oxford, reflected on the historical rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, drawing parallels to modern populist movements.
“Hitler and the Nazis came to power with the complicity of foolish businessmen and elites who thought they could control these forces. We see the same thing happening today with populism,” MacMillan stated.
Speaking with N1, she analyzed these comparisons, discussing how figures like Donald Trump have leveraged elites and propaganda. She also addressed pressing concerns about Russia's potential use of nuclear weapons and the absence of leaders comparable to Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, who steered the world during confrontations with powers like Nazi Germany, China, and Soviet Russia.
