In an interview with N1, Ivan Jani Novak, a member of the Slovenian band Laibach, said that Sarajevo, during the siege of the 1990s, demonstrated a special kind of tolerance in extraordinary circumstances.
Novak, who performed in Sarajevo in 1995, on the very day of the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, remembered the atmosphere in the city.
“In 1995, we played a program called NATO, after the album of the same name from 1994. When we were leaving Sarajevo in 1995, NATO was practically entering the city,” he said.
He said the group met “the best people” there, “those who stayed in Sarajevo defending the city.”
“The feeling at the time was fantastic, everyone worked for each other, and the community functioned,” Novak remembered.
The band will perform at the Sarajevo National Theater starting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Their last performance in Sarajevo was in 2018.
