The explantation of the liver at Zenica Cantonal Hospital was independently conducted by a multidisciplinary team from UKC Tuzla, while the transplant at UKC Tuzla was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Danko Mikulic and Dr. Jadranka Pavicic Saric from Merkur Clinical Hospital in Zagreb.

The early postoperative course of the patients is proceeding according to the surgical procedures, and they are currently in stable condition.

“The model of domestic and international cooperation has resulted in positive outcomes. The liver transplant performed yesterday shows that transplantation as a form of treatment remains a priority project at the Tuzla center. This is the first liver transplant since 2021, and I hope that the project for organ and tissue transplantation will gain momentum, leading to a greater number of transplants in the future. For us, the transplant project is of great significance because, in addition to offering patients a new chance at life, advancing transplant medicine also contributes to the development of all medical procedures,” said Prof. Dr. med. sc. Sekib Umihanic, director of UKC Tuzla.

At UKC Tuzla, in addition to the multidisciplinary team of surgeons and anesthesiologists, support for the transplants also came from various specialized teams, including the transfusion unit, laboratory diagnostics, hospital pharmacy, psychological and social protection services, and technical sector.

“The University Clinical Center Tuzla expresses its deep gratitude to the family members of the donor and the supervising colleagues from Merkur Clinical Hospital in Zagreb, as well as the Tuzla Canton police who facilitated the transportation of organs, which is crucial in these cases,” UKC Tuzla said in a statement.
