Croatian President Zoran Milanovic dismissed the possibility of a new conflict in Bosnia on Thursday, by saying ‘they don’t have enough food, they can only throw peanuts at each other,” during the ceremony marking the 29th anniversary of the formation of one of Croatia’s infantry brigades.

“They’re not on the brink of conflict, they ‘don’t have enough food on their tables, they can only shoot peanuts. Dodik is sometimes unrestrained, but we can agree with him in 10 minutes, not about the division of Bosnia, but about its arrangement. He is the last problem Bosnia has and especially from the perspective of Bosnian Croats,” Milanovic said when asked about a possible conflict in neighbouring BiH.

Last month, Bosnian Serb Presidency member Milorad Dodik said the Serb-dominated Republika Srpska (RS) entity has already formed expert teams that would deliver legal remedies through which the RS would pull out of agreements it signed years ago forming the state-level judiciary, tax administration and army. According to him, the competencies given to the state level must be returned to the RS as the Constitution does not provide for such institutions.

The move came after several of his and RS initiatives were rejected by the State or Constitutional Court and other state-level institutions as unconstitutional or illegal, and after the international community’s High Representative overseeing the civilian implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement that ended the 1992-1995 war in the country, imposed a genocide denial ban.

The ban prompted all Serb ministers and state officials at the state level to boycott the work of state institutions until the ban was repealed.

They also warned that they would not recognise the newly elected High Representative in the country in charge of overseeing the implementation of the civilian aspect of the Dayton Peace Agreement which ended the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia, Christian Schmidt, as he did not get the support from the Russian Federation.

“I don't know Schmidt, he was a German official, not the highest, I respect him, but the question is what kind of mandate he has and what he can do with such childish threats. Dodik represents the Serb people and you will not get rid of them, nor of Dragan Covic [the leader of the Croat Democratic Union – HDZ BiH, the strongest Croat party in the country] while he is what he is,” Milanovic told reporters.

“We will have misunderstandings, but let's see what we can do for BiH to stay intact,” said the Croatian President, who took part in marking the 29th anniversary of the 9th Guards Brigade “Wolves” and the Motorized Battalion “Wolves” in Gospic, Croatia.

He added that “each side must have someone they trust, and on the other hand someone they don't really trust.”

Christian Schmidt was prevented from presenting the High Representative’s regular report at the UN Security Council (UNSC) this Wednesday after the Russian Federation threatened to veto the extension of the EUFOR Althea, the EU’s peacekeeping mission in charge of overseeing the implementation of the military aspect of the Dayton Agreement.

They also removed any reference of the Office of the High Representative (OHR), the High Representative, or Christian Schmidt himself from the UNSC resolution, which was seen by many analysts and politicians as the withdrawal of the political support for the newly elected Schmidt and the institution he represents.
