The convicted war criminal and former general of the Republika Srpska (RS) Army, Ratko Mladic, talked to his son Darko Mladic after the verdict by which he was sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide in Srebrenica and other crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, telling him to protect the RS and that his own fate is not important.
Thank God, he's good. He is calm, poised as always in difficult times. He told me to tell everyone that NATO had tried and condemned him for defending his people and preventing NATO plans to expel Serbs from their centuries-old homelands. He said that the people shouldn't worry about this verdict, that the Republika Srpska should be protected, that it was created by the people, that our best sons died for our country and that our people should continue to fight and protect it. He added that his own fate is less important,” Darko Mladic told RTRS after the visit.
Judge Prisca Matimba Nyambe had a dissenting opinion from other members of the Appeals Chamber of the Mechanism for International Criminal Courts (MICT).
As he said, Mladic is “extremely grateful to Nyambe for showing personal and professional courage”.
“He knows what his people think of him. His words were focused on the fact that he is not important at this moment, that it is important to preserve the RS and that we must find a way to be united in the defence of the RS, that it is the legacy of our struggle and that no verdict can change that,” said Ratko Mladic's son.
Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb army general, was sentenced to life in prison by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (MICT), Tuesday, confirming the first instance verdict.
