The Mothers of Srebrenica Association issued a stern message to the European Union Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina following the visit of the EU's Chargé d'Affaires, Adebayo Babajide, and diplomats from EU member states to the military cemetery in Bratunac, where they laid a wreath.
The announcement that drew the most attention stated that during the wreath-laying was: “empathy and respect for all innocent civilian victims, as well as acceptance of historical and judicially established facts, are crucial for creating an environment conducive to reconciliation.”
This statement provoked a strong reaction from the Mothers of Srebrenica.
“Gentlemen Europeans, it is not the same. It is not the same to pay tribute to the victims of genocide and then to honour those who committed the genocide. It is not and cannot be. Your attitude towards the victims of genocide is extremely hypocritical and offensive. We are aware that among you there are those who do not care, but at least respect the resolutions of the European Parliament if you do not respect the victims of genocide. Your actions show a lack of empathy and understanding for the pain of the survivors. We demand an apology to the victims of genocide from the representatives of the European Union who visited the cemetery in Bratunac, or they should leave Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the statement read.
In addition to the Mothers of Srebrenica, Emir Suljagic, the director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center, and the Dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences in Sarajevo also condemned the EU Delegation's action. They asserted that the act paid tribute to the forces of Karadzic and Mladic, who committed war crimes and genocide and brutally killed civilians in Bratunac and Srebrenica.
