Mural reading 'Ratko Mladic Boulevard' appears in Novi Sad

One of the buildings bears the words 'Ratko Mladic Boulevard', painted in white and blue and framed to resemble official city street signs, it said.

War criminal Mladic, who was convicted of genocide in Srebrenica, died in a Hague prison on 27 August, aged 85. He is still glorified as a national hero in some circles in Serbia.

The media have reported that Mladic's death has once again raised questions about Serbia's attitude towards the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska and convicted war criminal.

There is uncertainty over where and how he will be buried. President Aleksandar Vucic said the state would help with logistical arrangements if the family decided to bury him in Serbia, while Justice Minister Nenad Vujic said Mladic should be buried with the highest state and military honours.

Some members of the public have pointed out that similar stickers and posters reading 'Ratko Mladic Boulevard' were put up in Belgrade in 2007 by officials of the then Serbian Radical Party, including Vucic, who was the party's secretary-general at the time.

Radio Free Europe reported at the time that party members had publicly put up the posters in support of Mladic.

Mladic was commander of the Army of Republika Srpska during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague convicted him of genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war committed during the conflict in BiH and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
