A team of N1 television journalists reflected on the station's journey, its achievements and the principles of freedom and independence that have guided their journalism over the past decade. Pioneering reporters Tina Kosor Giljevic from Zagreb, Branislav Sovljanski from Belgrade, and Tina Jelin Dizdar from Sarajevo shared their experiences, challenges, and what motivates them to stay committed to independent journalism in the region.

Discussing N1’s founding, Jelin Dizdar recalled how the project initially seemed uncertain but has since flourished beyond expectations. “It wasn't easy, but it was worth it. We doubted it in the beginning, but seeing the commitment of journalists in Sarajevo, Belgrade, and Zagreb gave us hope,” she said. Today, she takes pride in how N1 has grown into a symbol of integrity and thanked viewers for their loyalty.

Kosor Giljevic added that the launch in Croatia also came with doubts but that a team dedicated to innovative news delivery helped N1 find its place. “We aimed to bring live content, broader perspectives, and in-depth analysis, akin to CNN or BBC. At first, the audience had to get to know us, but today, we’ve rekindled a love for real news,” she noted.

In Belgrade, Sovljanski recalled the energy of building a station from scratch, even while facing historical floods in 2014. “The excitement of those first days, especially when CNN reached out for coverage of the floods, was a defining moment. Since then, we’ve consistently raised the bar, even under constant pressure,” he reflected.

Impact of digital media on N1’s mission

All three journalists highlighted the growing importance of digital media, noting that, while it increases reach, it also brings challenges like misinformation. They underscored N1’s commitment to verified and timely news, which has helped set it apart as a credible source in the region.

Challenges and the fight for objectivity

N1’s reporters have faced threats, insults, and political pressure over the years, yet this has only strengthened their resolve. Jelin Dizdar recounted incidents of harassment by high-ranking politicians, including Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity President Milorad Dodik. “It became routine for politicians to ignore or refuse our questions. Yet, our loyalty is to the audience, not to those in power,” she asserted.

Sovljanski added that facing pushback only fuels their dedication to impartial reporting. “They [politicians] might try to cut us off or refuse interviews, but we persist. Our job is to seek answers, no matter who is in power,” he said.

Kosor Giljevic noted that although Croatia sees less overt criticism, the government’s lack of engagement is noticeable. “Though the situation is less volatile here, it’s frustrating that top officials avoid us,” she shared.

Looking ahead

As N1 celebrates its 10-year anniversary, the network remains resolute in its mission. “We've created a legacy of truth and transparency,” Jelin Dizdar concluded. “This milestone belongs to our viewers and team, and we’ll continue to fight for independent journalism.”
