O’Flaherty: Glorification of convicted war criminals is not protected speech under human rights law

“I am appalled by the public glorification of Ratko Mladic, the late war criminal convicted of genocide in Srebrenica and crimes against humanity, including statements by officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s entity of Republika Srpska and Serbia,” Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O’Flaherty said.

He stressed that such glorification constitutes a criminal offense under Bosnia and Herzegovina’s law and is not speech protected by the European Convention on Human Rights.
“I call on all authorities to oppose the glorification of convicted war criminals and fulfill their legal obligations to ensure accountability, protect victims’ rights and support justice,” O’Flaherty said.
