White paint was thrown at the mural of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic in central Belgrade on Wednesday, a day after protests over the authorities’ failure to remove it.
The mural was painted onto the wall of an apartment building in central Belgrade’s Njegoseva street several months earlier. Its removal was called for by human rights organizations but the city authorities failed to order communal services to paint over it.
The Nova.rs portal published a picture of the mural covered in white paint on Wednesday. An N1 journalist who passed by the mural early on Wednesday morning said that the mural was undamaged and that a man in civilian clothes was standing in front of it.
Human rights activist and former MP Aida Corovic was arrested on Tuesday afternoon after pelting eggs at the mural. Her arrest led to a protest whose participants marched from a central square in front of parliament to Njegoseva street following her release where they were stopped by a cordon of police. A second cordon was put in place separating the protesters from a group of hooligans who shouted verbal abuse at them.
