Polish media: Bus crash victims were returning from Medjugorje pilgrimage

Foreign Ministry spokesman Maciej Wewiór confirmed that "everything indicates that they were returning from Medjugorje", while local authorities in the pilgrims' home region also confirmed the information.

Twelve people were killed and at least 10 injured when a Polish bus overturned on a motorway in eastern Hungary. The bus, which had entered Hungary from Serbia, overturned around 1 a.m. near Mezőkeresztes, about 140 kilometres east of Budapest. There were 57 passengers and two drivers on board.

Police said the bus, travelling on the M3 motorway towards Nyíregyháza, left the road on a straight section and overturned in a ditch. Preliminary information suggests the driver may have fallen asleep. He was detained by police.

Eleven people died at the scene and another died after being taken to hospital. Hungarian emergency services said they treated one person in critical condition, nine with serious injuries and 37 with minor injuries.

The crash is Hungary's deadliest bus accident since the 2003 Siófok disaster, when a train collided with a bus carrying German tourists at a level crossing, killing 33 people.

On 6 August 2022, 12 Polish pilgrims were killed and more than 40 injured in a bus crash near Breznicki Hum in Croatia, while travelling to Medjugorje.
