Pro-Bosnian parties in Srebrenica have agreed to back a single candidate for mayor in this year’s local elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The chosen candidate is Hamdija Fejzic, who confirmed his candidacy to N1.
“All parties have agreed to support me as an independent candidate for Srebrenica. Earlier, SDP and NiP agreed to my candidacy, and now Stranka za BiH and SDA have also joined. We knew, as in previous elections, that we had to go with one candidate. Initially, there were three candidates, but in the end, I was chosen as the only one. I remind you that in the 2020 elections, we had nine candidates for mayor, but we still managed to narrow it down to one. This time, the negotiations took longer, but we reached an agreement,” Fejzic said.
Fejzic highlighted the importance of these municipal elections, noting the likelihood that Serbian citizens will also vote, as seen in previous elections.
“When it comes to elections, we have issues with the voter base coming from Serbia, which we witnessed recently during their municipal elections in Belgrade and other cities. This voting machinery impacts elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially in Srebrenica. I believe the Central Election Commission of BiH needs to address these concerns and controls, particularly considering this pilot project. Although Srebrenica is not currently included in the pilot project for better election oversight, I hope this decision will be reconsidered in time. Increased monitoring is needed, especially at polling stations near Serbia and Bajina Basta,” Fejzic added.
Earlier candidates for the mayoral position in Srebrenica for this year's elections included Faruk Djozic and Muhamed Avdic.
It is also speculated that the current mayor of Srebrenica, Mladen Grujicic, will run as an independent candidate, with the SNSD municipal committee proposing Milos Vucic as their candidate. There is also a possibility of Aleksandar Simic running as another independent candidate.
