The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals will on Tuesday deliver a final verdict in the case against Bosnian Serb wartime commander Ratko Mladic, who was given a life sentence in the first-instance trial, and the chief prosecutor expects the ruling to be upheld.
The final verdict, made by a five-member appeals council of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (MICT), will be announced in the court's headquarters in The Hague on Tuesday.
The chief prosecutor of the MICT, Serge Brammertz, told Bosnia and Herzegovina's BH Radio 1 on Monday that he expected the confirmation of the life sentence.
However, he said that he did not expect that all other problems would cease with the final judgement. In this context, he warned against attempts to downplay war crimes and contest facts established by the court.
In November 2017, Mladic, whom foreign media have named the “Butcher of Bosnia”, reporting about his responsibility for the worst atrocities on European soil after World War II, was found guilty of genocide in Srebrenica, crimes against humanity and breaches of laws and customs of war during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
