Associate Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the World Jewish Congress, Menachem Z. Rosensaft, said Germany did the right thing by withdrawing the award for Israeli historian Gideon Greif, known for his controversial stances on the 1995 Srebrenica genocide.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was supposed to award Greif with the Order of Cross for Special Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in Israel on November 10 last year, but after the criticism over the historian's denial of Srebrenica genocide the award proposal was withdrawn.
Rosensaft already criticised the report that a commission with Greif at its helm drafted, which denied that genocide was committed in Bosnian eastern town Srebrenica in 1995.
He called the report an “embarrassment.”
Speaking to N1, Rosensaft said that the denial of the Srebrenica genocide is the same as the Holocaust denial and the Holocaust distortion.
“Both are phenomena of a denial of history and an attempt to recast history for the benefit of ultranationalist political forces,” he stressed.
As for the withdrawal of Germany's award for Greif, Rosensaft said it was an absolutely right decision. According to him, president Steinmeier is an honourable person who would not “be associated in a million years with genocide denial.”
