Gervasio Sanchez, celebrated Spanish journalist, war reporter and photographer, is an Honorary Citizen of the City of Sarajevo. This valuable city recognition was presented to him on Tuesday by the Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karic.
“We are glad that you are with us today in our and your Sarajevo. We don't forget our friends who were by our side during our most difficult moments,” Karic said at the City Hall with words of thanks for his professional and human dedication to the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Gervasio Sanchez said that he discovered Sarajevo back in 1981 as a student of journalism. It was love at first sight and Sarajevo became one of the most attractive cities in the world for him.
Unfortunately, a decade later, he witnessed the shocking images of Sarajevo, the suffering of its citizens, destruction of landmarks such as the City Hall, from which Sanchez's famous photo of the refraction of light through the ruins of this symbol was created.
