Andreas Schieder MEP expressed support for the efforts to keep N1 and other United Media outlets independent as well as concern over the growing political influence over the media in Serbia.

“Free and independent journalism is a cornerstone of democracy across Europe. The courage of N1’s editors to stand up for their independence deserves recognition and support,” he said in a written statement.

“It is deeply concerning to see the growing political influence over media in Serbia, which makes genuine public debate and free opinion-building increasingly difficult. Ensuring media pluralism and protecting journalists from political pressure are essential steps on Serbia’s path towards the European Union,” Schieder said.

“Those who defend press freedom defend democracy itself and they can count on our full solidarity,” he added.

Earlier on Monday, the management teams of N1, Nova, Radar, and Danas in Serbia officially submitted a bid to acquire United Group’s news media outlets from UG’s owner BC Partners.
