In an interview on the hard-talk show Pressing, Christian Schmidt, the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, addressed pressing political issues concerning Milorad Dodik, the Bosnian Serb leader, and the broader political situation in the country.

Schmidt emphasized that local leaders must take responsibility rather than waiting for the international community to resolve the country’s problems. “We need to spread awareness in this country that we should decide on everything and not wait for others to decide,” he stated.

Schmidt criticized the dysfunctional state of the country's political institutions, often fueled by corrupt practices and ethnic divisions. He mentioned that Bosnia’s path to the EU is being hindered by a lack of reforms, particularly due to internal disputes. He expressed frustration that “some political leaders keep undermining progress, and people are losing patience.” Schmidt reiterated his commitment to ensuring Bosnia and Herzegovina remains on track for Euro-Atlantic integration.

Regarding Dodik, Schmidt clarified that while he hasn’t dismissed him yet, he is prepared to act if any moves toward secession or segregation are made. “If any law is passed that sets the stage for secession, I will step in,” Schmidt warned, noting that Dodik’s influence is not as absolute as it once was. “Not everyone in Republika Srpska listens to Dodik like they used to.”

Schmidt also addressed rumors of a deal allowing Dodik to retire in exchange for keeping his wealth and avoiding prosecution. He dismissed these speculations, emphasizing that “everything is done according to the law.”

When asked about the potential closure of the Office of the High Representative (OHR), Schmidt firmly stated that the office would only close once Bosnia and Herzegovina became a full member of the European Union. “I plan to stay and ensure this country remains on the right path,” he affirmed.

The High Representative also touched on the troubling educational system in Republika Srpska, where war criminals like Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic are celebrated as heroes. Schmidt highlighted this as a dangerous practice, saying, “Education must tell the truth, and there’s no room for glorifying war criminals.”

In conclusion, Schmidt reiterated his commitment to Bosnia’s stability, vowing to use all tools at his disposal, including sanctions, if necessary, to ensure that Bosnia and Herzegovina remains sovereign and united. He stressed that the international community and NATO remain dedicated to maintaining peace in the region.
