Bosnian Security Minister Selmo Cikotic said that construction works at the Lipa migrant camp - in Bosnia's northwest - might be finalised in three months, which will provide the migrants with adequate accommodation.
The minister, who visited the camp on Wednesday in the company of International Organisation for Migrations (IOM) chief of staff, Eugenio Ambrosi, and Austrian ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Ulrike Hartmann, said the works to improve the living conditions in the camp are continuously ongoing.
“We owe a gratitude to our partners in the overall process – the IOM, the states of Austria and Germany, as well as all other partners and donors,” said Cikotic.
Currently, the improvised tent settlement at this location in Bosnia's northwestern Una-Sana Canton provides accommodation for some 1,000 migrants. Hundreds more are located in other three camps in that part of the country, while still an unspecified number of migrants is roaming around and seeking shelter in abandoned houses and buildings.
IOM's Ambrosi said the cooperation among all participants in the process has finally reached a quality level, which has brought results.
“We are heading together towards establishing a quality system, which will control and manage migration process in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The International Organisation for Migrations will continue fully supporting the state institutions and be a partner in solving all problems, but I also hope all parts of the country will get engaged or be more involved in the process,” he was quoted as saying.
Ambassador Hartmann said the living conditions not only in the Lipa camp but also at some other locations have significantly improved.
“I saw how it looked like two years ago at the Borici centre, and today that's a place for a dignified stay of people. The European Union, particularly Austria, have provided significant financial support and I am sure it will stay that way in the upcoming period,” she said.
The construction works on the migrant settlement for about 1,500 migrants and refugees in Lipa near Bihac, Bosnia's northwest, are carried out with the financial support of the European Union and all partners in the process.
