Senahid Halilovic, a member of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Academy of Sciences and Arts and full professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, died on April 24, 2023. Information about the commemoration and funeral will be published at a later date - the BiH Slavic Committee announced.
Academic Senahid Halilovic graduated and received his master's and PhD at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade. In 1991, he published the book Bosnian Language, the first in which the peculiarities of the Bosnian language were discussed as an equal idiom to the Croatian and Serbian languages.
After that book, which broke down the barriers on the way to the affirmation of the Bosnian language and after the start of the war, Halilović began the creation of his capital work: The Orthography of the Bosnian Language. Although it was made in difficult conditions in wartime Sarajevo and without the support of an adequate team, the book was published in 1996 and it became the basis of the standardization of the Bosnian language.
In the years that followed, Halilovic continued to make a crucial contribution to the standardization of the Bosnian language, first as a co-author of the Grammar of the Bosnian Language and then the Dictionary of the Bosnian Language. Finally, Halilovic rounded off his contribution to the standardization of the Bosnian language in 2017 with the second edition of the Orthography of the Bosnian Language, which was also published as a free mobile application that was downloaded over 30,000 times.
Academic Senahid Halilovic published 18 books printed in over 100,000 copies, and more than 100 scientific and professional papers. He became a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of BiH in 2019.
