An exhibition of photographs titled The Soul of Srebrenica by Sarajevo photographer Midhat Poturovic is set to open at the NGO Hub in Belgrade over the weekend, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights said on Friday.

Poturovic took the pictures over a period of several years working on stories about Srebrenica after the war.

“We survived the war, inherited a harsh and painful past which obliges us to build a better future,” he said adding that the past has to be discussed openly to prevent a repetition in the future.

“We can’t fall victim to our own mental laziness in the search for the truth. The young generation has to fight against the bad heritage of our parents, society and the bad political system,” he said.

The Soul of Srebrenica series of photographs won an award for engaged photography in the former Yugoslav and contributions to developing a culture of remembrance as well as awards from the International Photography Awards (IPA), Pictures of the Year International (POYi), Balkan Photo Award, Swedish Picture of the Year, UNICEF, BETA photograph of the year, Fokus Award and photograph fo the year in his native Bosnia-Herzegovina. Poturovic’s work has been exhibited in a number of countries.
