Turkish nationals arrested for smuggling migrants from Montenegro into BiH

Members of the Trebinje Unit of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday arrested two citizens of the Republic of Türkiye after preventing the smuggling of 12 foreign nationals.

While monitoring the state border in the Gacko municipality area, smuggling was detected involving a VW passenger vehicle with BiH license plates transporting illegal migrants, traveling from Montenegro towards the territory of BiH. In the vehicle were the suspected driver and co-driver, both citizens of the Republic of Türkiye, the Border Police of BiH reported.

The case involves 12 foreign nationals – nine citizens of Egypt and three citizens of Iran, among whom were nine minors.

Due to the existence of grounds for suspicion of the criminal offense of smuggling persons, the on-duty prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH and the preliminary proceedings judge of the Court of BiH were notified.

Acting on their orders, the suspects were arrested, the vehicle searched, and evidence temporarily seized.

Officials of the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs of BiH and the Trebinje Public Institution Center for Social Work were also informed of the case in order to undertake measures within their jurisdiction. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
