A gunman killed twelve people, including two children, in the Montenegrin town of Cetinje, while doctors are fighting to save four others who suffered life-threatening injuries, reported the Montenegrin daily Vijesti.
The Montenegrin government has declared three days of national mourning from Thursday, January 2.
Prosecutor Andrijana Nastic confirmed that the twelve victims were killed in Cetinje, and that suspected shooter Aco Martinovic took his own life.
On Wednesday afternoon, the shooter opened fire at a restaurant in Cetinje, killing four people. He then proceeded to four other locations in the city, where he killed eight more people, including three women and two brothers aged 10 and 13, Vijesti reported.
All police units, including members of the Special Police Unit, spent hours searching for Martinovic. He died just minutes before midnight after reportedly shooting himself in the head when police surrounded him near his family home, confirmed the acting police director. Martinovic was pronounced dead while being transported to the Clinical Center in the capital of Podgorica.
This incident marks the second deadly shooting in Cetinje since August 12, 2022, when a gunman killed ten people, including two boys, brothers, in the city’s Medovina neighborhood.
