Ukrainian MP Inna Sovsun told N1 that, while Ukrainians knew that civilians were being killed in Russian-controlled areas in the country, nobody expected that this would be done with so much cruelty, as was seen in Bucha.
The videos of what Ukrainian soldiers found when they entered the town emerged on Saturday.
“That was the first day when we were thinking that Bucha was liberated from the Russians and is finally under Ukraine’s control. Then, as we were getting the news that Ukrainian soldiers were going into Bucha, we at the same time received images
“I was thinking before that once they are out of the Kyiv region I will feel relieved, but I actually didn’t. Because as the Ukrainian forces were moving in, we were learning about all those crimes.”
“We were all terrified with what we saw. I know that this was to be expected in one way or another. We knew that they were killing civilians, we knew that they were raping women, we were getting reports about that. But I think we didn’t realise the extent to which this was happening, we didn’t realise the specific cruelty with which they were doing that,” she said.
“It’s one thing to fight and be at war, but it’s completely different to be the monsters that they were behaving like they are,” she said.
She said that the mayor of Irpin reported that in one of the areas Russian soldiers shot Ukrainian women and girls and then ran them over with tanks.
“This is unexplainable cruelty, there is no reason for that. And I think that people who are doing that must be sick psychologically,” she said, adding that there were also children with their hands tied behind their backs who were shot in the head.
