Eric Nelson, the US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, said it is possible to conduct electoral reform during 2021, which is a non-election year, so that all citizens can equally participate in the next coming election process in 2022.

Speaking to the Bosnia edition of the Vecernji list daily, originally a Croatia-based newspaper, Nelson said he regrets the fact that the inter-agency working group in charge of the electoral reform was not formed earlier, adding that nevertheless the certain progress has already been made and that the process needs to speed up.

As for the influence of various global powers in BiH and the region, the ambassador noted that there is a clear difference between the goals of Russia and China and Euro-Atlantic partner, with Russia “promoting divisions.”

According to him, Russia does not advocate a more stable and sustainable BiH, and does not see corruption as a problem.

On the other hand, he stressed, the USA made it clear that the corruption undermines democracy and business in the country, and contributes to insecurity which is pushing many talented people to leave BiH.

“As for the US, which shares the same values as your country, we believe that your future is in the Euro-Atlantic community, as a democratic and sovereign country, whose territorial integrity is not questionable, We share the same values,” Nelson was quoted as saying.

Asked about the possibility of US President Joe Biden visiting Bosnia, the ambassador said that such a visit has to be deserved and it greatly depends on the progress that the country will achieve in the upcoming period.
