US citizen dies while hiking in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The American national was fatally injured while hiking on Mount Maglic with his wife. During the hike, he slipped on an icy ledge and fell into a ravine several hundred metres deep.

Rescue teams launched a search operation immediately after being alerted, but due to the challenging terrain, they were only able to recover the victim's body on Sunday morning.

Nenad Ikonic of the Mountain Rescue Service of Republika Srpska (GSS) said earlier that the accident occurred at an altitude of around 2,200 metres. The search involved a 12-member GSS team assisted by the police and civil protection services.

The district prosecutor's office in Foca is conducting an investigation and will question witnesses. These are Slovak and Russian nationals who were on Mount Maglic at the time of the accident.
