The US Embassy supported the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica, stating that its importance is even greater due to the constant denial of the genocide and the need to convey the truth to new generations and honor the victims of this crime.
The United States proudly cosponsored the UN General Assembly resolution, put forward by Rwanda, Germany, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, commemorating the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide and welcomes its adoption. The repeated denial of the Srebrenica genocide makes international commemoration of the events of 1995 even more important and urgent.
The resolution underscores that genocide occurred in and around Srebrenica in July 1995, an indisputable fact established by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the International Court of Justice, and a large body of forensic evidence.
The resolution does not target any Member State and does not assign collective responsibility to any group of people. As the resolution makes clear, we all have an obligation to acknowledge the facts, teach the truth, honor the victims, support ongoing efforts to find and identify the victims, and prosecute the perpetrators. These steps are essential for reconciliation,” the US Embassy said on X.
On Thursday, May 23, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica. Eighty-four countries voted in favour of the Resolution, 18 were against it, and 68 abstained.
