Sejfudin Hodzic, a Bosnian who left the country for London to seek for a better future, is back in Bosnia again. After years spent in the British capital, Hodzic said he learned the true values of life.
In an interview with N1, Hodzic spoke about his experience of studying and working abroad, and he opened the conversation with an anecdote i.e. a conversation with a professor with whom he talked about his origins.
“I shyly confessed I come from a small country called Bosnia. So he asked me if I lived in the capital city and I said ‘no, I used to live in a small town of Zvornik’. And when he asked if we owned land and cattle, I replied shyly again ‘well, yes, we did’,” said Hodzic.
The professor's response, unexpectedly for Hodzic, was: “You're a Lord.”
It took him some time to understand that it was a big deal to own land in England, so now he often says: “I left for London as a peasant, I came back as a Lord.”
Hodzic worked as a banker for most of the time he lived in London but, as he noted, the money he earned will never compensate for the amount of stress he was exposed to.
“I was there for a long time and the stress was never-ending. No matter how much you earn, it cannot justify the stress, which at the end of the day greatly affects your health,” said Hodzic.
On the other hand, his almost idyllic life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, cannot be found anywhere else.
“Compared to that, I took a ride from home this morning, to say ‘as a lord’, from Zvornik. I drove along the Drina river, breathed in the clean air, and here I am on Bjelasnica mountain. You can see this peace, it is incredible,” he added.
If there was a piece of advice he could give to young people, Hodzic said it would be to go abroad, learn new things and come back to make the system in Bosnia and Herzegovina better than it is now.
According to him, there is no sufficient support in the country to use all the potentials
“Of course, challenges exists, it is always easier to say it is better over there until they go there and see. We need young people to go, to learn new things but that they never forget where they come from. We need them to bring their experience back to Bosnia and Herzegovina. That's the only way to make a new England or Switzerland and to live in it,” concluded Hadzic.
