An unnamed State Department spokesperson told the Voice of America that Washington is deeply disappointed with Pristina’s decision to implement the Central Bank of Kosovo decree making the Euro the only legal currency.

VOA said that the written reply to its request for comments added that the US is opposed to the implementation of the decision which effectively bans the Serbian Dinar from Kosovo. It added that this and similar unilateral steps limit the options of the US which supports Kosovo on the international scene. The decree on the Euro took effect on February 1.

The VOA recalled that Washington called for a review of the decision and a delay in its implementation. The State Department spokesperson said the decision was taken without adequate preparation and consultations. The spokesperson wrote that the Kosovo authorities have been asked to say which acute problems will be resolved with the new rules but failed to provide an adequate answer.

According to the spokesperson, this step is not in line with Kosovo’s commitment to solve the problems of the minority Serb community through the dialogue under European Union auspices.
