The Minister of Health of Sarajevo Canton, Enis Hasanovic, has issued a decision declaring a leptospirosis epidemic in the Canton.

An outbreak of leptospirosis was detected at the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS), and it was later announced by the institution that 17 patients had arrived with symptoms characteristic of the infectious disease.

The patients have been treated at KCUS, and the Sarajevo Canton Public Health Institute has released detailed information to the public, advising citizens on how to protect themselves.

It is also known that leptospirosis appeared as early as April, but there was no timely response, nor were citizens informed about the outbreak. Additionally, deratization — which should have been carried out immediately — was not conducted at the time, nor from 2022 until mid-2024.

A deratization campaign has now been ordered, with the epicenter of the outbreak identified in the municipality of Novi Grad, specifically in Dobrinja, from where it spread to surrounding neighborhoods, primarily Alipašino Polje Phase B.

However, due to the lack of a timely response, the infection has spread to other municipalities as well and has been identified in Centar and Ilidža.
