Over 12,000 cubic meters of waste came to the Visegrad hydropower plant after a garbage barrier (boom) placed further upstream snapped, Srna news agency reported Wednesday.
The technical director of this company, Tomislav Popovic, told reporters that the barrier broke under the pressure of waste and a large amount of water, but that it is still not threatening the operation of the plant, however, it is necessary to replace it.
“Now we have a boom that protects the machines, but the purchase of a boom that protects the crown of the hydroelectric power plant is necessary, and until then we will remove the waste mechanically,” Popovic explained, adding that there is no danger in case of heavy rainfall.
Waste cleaning supervisor Aleksandar Vukovic said that 100 cubic meters of waste are removed daily, and according to his estimate, 12,000 cubic meters of garbage reached the dam.
