Today, only two students attend the elementary school in the Prekaja settlement near Drvar. In contrast, before the war, the school had some 400 students.
The school director, Dubravka Kunic, told Srna news agency that the two students are actually two sisters attending the fourth and fifth grades in the regional department.
“They and their parents live in the school building. Next year, their brother will also start the first grade,” Kunic said, adding that classes in Prekaja are held until the fifth grade.
She recalled that the elementary school in Prekaja had about 400 students before the 1992-1995 war in BiH.
“Classrooms were full, the gymnasium was equipped, as were the classrooms, the building was functional, unlike today, when it’s decaying and leaking,” Kunic said.
She listed the numerous needs of the Elementary School in Drvar, which include solving the problems of the roof, floors and wet joints, as well as the acquisition of computer equipment and video surveillance. The director stated that currently, a total of 303 students attend the Elementary School in Drvar.
Before the war, the village of Prekaja near Drvar had a registry office, a post office, a school, several shops and an inn. Today, the village is mostly inhabited by older returnees.
Prekaja is a local community that occupies almost half of the area of the municipality of Drvar, from which it is about 15 kilometres away. It is located on the regional road that connects the municipalities of Drvar and Glamoc.
This is not a unique case. Three years ago, N1 published a story from the village of Jasenik near Konjic, where only two students also attended the district school.
