The Drina River is facing high pollution due to the waste that its tributaries carry along. It is a long-standing problem without a solution.
Tons of waste can be seen in the Drina River in vicinity of Visegrad. Residents of nearby settlements express discontent and fear from epidemics. Ecologists and locals warn that this pollution pose a large-scale environmental disaster.
Goražde residents explain for N1 that the Drina River carries along the waste from its tributaries, which are polluted due to human negligence, industry and illegal waste landfills, whose number is constantly increasing.
Alen Selimovic, a local from Gorazde, warns that there are more than 100 illegal wast landfills, adding that all waste during the summer, when people clean up their backyards, end up in the Drina River tributaries.
“Any fellow citizen of Gorazde can see that the Drina River is carrying waste. Awareness may be one of the biggest problems as well as the law solutions which are almost not noticeable. I have not heard anyone was ever fined for an environmental offence,” says Eldin Baljevic, another concerned citizen of Gorazde.
