The Bosnian student who was arrested in Turkey over suspicion that he may be part of FETO could be released while the investigation is still ongoing, according to Bosnia’s Ambassador to Turkey, Bakir Sadovic.

“Both I and Mr. Began Muhic (Bosnia’s Consul General in Turkey) are optimistic that he could be released while the investigation is ongoing, so that he could continue with his exams,” Sadovic told N1.

Selmir Masetovic was arrested in the Turkish town of Usak on May 22 on suspicion that he is a member of FETO, which Turkey declared an armed terrorist organisation which was responsible for the responsible for the 2016 coup attempt in the country.

Masetovic is currently held at a detention centre in Usak, Turkey.

Turkey’s Prosecutors’ Office informed the General Consulate of Bosnia and Herzegovina of the arrest on May 25. Bosnia’s Embassy in Ankara has been following the case closely and requested for the young man to be released pending trial.

“We are still waiting for an expert evaluation of the technical device which will be completed on Monday. Should the evaluation be in favour of Mr. Selmir, he could be released until the investigation is finished as the indictment was still not submitted,” Sadovic said, adding that he expects a “positive outcome”.

The Ambassador said that he had informed the current Chairman of Bosnia’s tripartite Presidency, Bakir Izetbegovic, of the case as soon as it came to light.

“Since the beginning, we are in contact with the office of Mr. Izetbegovic. Every time we get an indictment, when one of our citizens is detained, we inform the Minitry of Foreign Affairs and this time the office of Bosnian Presidency Chairman, Bakir Izetbegovic,” he said.
