RS opposition party expects to win October election

One of the opposition leaders in the Serb-dominated part of Bosnia said on Tuesday that chances are good that a coalition of parties running against the ruling Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) of Milorad Dodik will win the October election.

Dragan Cavic, the president of the National Democratic Movement (NDP), said his party will run for the state Parliament together with the Serb Democratic Party (SDS) in the upcoming general election.

In October, Bosnians will vote for the state Government and Presidency, but also for who will fill the seats in the Parliaments and Presidencies of Bosnia’s two semi-autonomous entities, the Federation (FBiH) and Republika Srpska (RS).

The NDP is part of the Alliance for Changes, a coalition of parties challenging Dodik’s party in Republika Srpska, but they are currently in power at the state level, representing Bosnia's Serbs.

“According to all relevant assessments, the NDP stands good and our rating stands between 4.5 and 5 percent, and the same assessments say chances for candidates of the Alliance for Changes to be elected for Republika Srpska President and Serb member of Bosnia’s Presidency are strong,” Cavic said.

Should the Alliance for Changes candidate for the RS Presidency, Vukota Govedarica, win the election, Cavic said he expects that he personally will be the head of the (entity) government once it is formed.

Cavic said that should he win, he will raise pensions and cut down on purchases of vehicles for government officials.

The NDP expects to achieve a “serious” result in the upcoming election and it is realistic to expect that it will have seven seats in the RS National Assembly, he said.
