BIRN database on car expenses by Bosnian institutions

Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN BiH) presented its Database of official automobiles of Bosnian institutions and public companies, saying that only last year, Bosnian institutions spent some BAM 10 million (around EUR 5 million) on vehicles.

“This is a database of official cars belonging to all Bosnian institutions. We conducted an analysis which showed that last year alone, BAM 10 million was spent on car purchases. This year, nearly BAM 9 million (around EUR 4.5 million) was spent on the purchase of cars and it will be interesting to see how much will be spent by the end of 2018,” BIRN’s Mirna Buljugic said.

“The car register data is collected daily and BIRN will continue to monitor the public procurement website to regularly update the database. The register was made so that Bosnian citizens would be able to have insight into the spending of public funds,” she added.

BIRN’s Semir Mujkic said they wrote countless texts and due to the amount of material in the texts, they decided to create the database.

“We realised there is so much material that we wrote so we decided to collect all the data in one place and show the citizens what the process of public procurement of cars looks like. All citizens who visit the website auto.detektor.ba will get a detailed insight into the data we collected,” Mujkic said. “From the beginning of 2018, BAM 3 million (around EUR 1.5 million) has been provided for limousines.”

The database contains completed and active tenders for the purchase of official cars in 2018 as well as fleets and maintenance costs of several hundred institutions and public companies. It also provides the possibility to search all the announced tenders for vehicle purchases and other expenses, as well as information on compliance with procurement procedures.
