Srebrenica music bands evoke memories and connect people

Six music bands have gathered in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica again to hold a concert and evoke memories. The event marks its tenth anniversary this year.

The concert is organized by the Tourism Organisation of Srebrenica and the Afera band. Their goal is to gather the Srebrenica people living abroad and those who still live there, to have fun and remember the old times.

“I think it was the summer 1986, of course, I remember. There were those who were playing some music and they let us play a few songs. We were happy and satisfied. That was something,” guitarist Nedim Mulalic said

The concert will take place this weekend on the stage of a devastated city café.

Mulalic lives in the US today, working as a driver. He bought the instruments and the equipment for the Srebrenica gathering as a gift to the locals.

The guitarist will perform with the Inat band, in which he used to play before the 1990s war. His fellow band member, drummer Faruk Smajovic, is the one who initiated the concert, which is titled As It Used to Be.

The experienced musicians will be accompanied by young generations. They practice for the show together.

The organizers prepared a small handcraft fair as well. Women from the area will be selling handmade and home-made products.

The locals see the event as an opportunity for getting together and connecting diaspora, those who live there and random visitors.
