Thousands of professional and recreational cyclists took part in the annual city ride ‘Giro di Sarajevo’ on Sunday, with an aim to raise awareness of healthy lifestyle and reducing the pollution by reducing the use of motor vehicles.
“Eleven years ago we couldn’t even imagine that Sarajevo would be covered by cycling infrastructure and that we would have our own lanes. (…) We must say that bicycles are the best means of transport, without exhaust gas and it has the best impact on our health,” said Giro di Sarajevo Project Manager, Emir Hulusic.
According to Hulusic, the number of cyclists taking part in this event proves the organizers managed to do a lot on making the cycling popular not only in Sarajevo but in the entire country. This year, nearly 3,000 of participants cycled through the streets of Sarajevo in the Giro di Sarajevo race.
“We hope to catch the pace with European countries very soon. The best and closest example is Slovenia. We are lagging behind but we hope to catch up soon,” said Hulusic.
The most visited cycling manifestation in the country is aimed at pointing out the necessity of implementing the modern urban solution in the city area and enabling the cyclists to safely find their ways to school and work, disburdening the traffic and preserving the environment at the same time.
