The public space is filled with glorification of war criminals and denial of war crimes, the Chief Prosecutor for the UN Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (UN MICT) said after visiting Croatia’s capital of Zagreb.
Serge Brammertz told N1 that not enough has been done in the region on solving war crimes.
“The cooperation between my office and the Croatian judiciary is very good,” he said. “Our criticism refers to regional cooperation and cases we have transferred to Bosnia and Herzegovina a while ago. This is where see that improvement is needed.”
He then referred to cases concerning crimes committed in Croatia.
“As I said, there is room for improvement because without a doubt war crimes were committed on a number of Serb victims during operation ‘Storm’,” he said.
Operation Storm was the last major battle of the Croatian War of Independence in which the Croatian Army crushed a self-proclaimed Serb autonomous region called Srpska Krajina.
