European future is the only true alternative for the region of Western Balkans and a goal to strive for, said Sonja Biserko a former diplomat and current Chairwoman of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia.

“That remains a goal that needs to be strived for and aspired to, and it requires a lot more of efforts not only by political elites, which are not really sincere in this sense but by citizens as well,” Biserko said, speaking for N1's Newsroom.

However, as she pointed out, the citizens are kept hostages of the political elites, which are stuck in ethnonationalism.

“The citizens are much more mature and have demonstrated on several occasions a readiness and will to turn to the European Union integration,” said Biserko pointing out that the political elites were the ones blocking the processes in Bosnia

According to her, Bosnia needs a stronger presence of the international community which, Biserko stressed, “is responsible” for the Dayton Agreement, the document that ended the Bosnia's 1992-95 war, and how it was installed.

“A great deal of the political elites is significantly corrupted and criminalised, and they have no interests as they defend their own positions. They defend their positions by all means,” she added.

Commenting on the Bosnia's general election held on October 7, Biserko stressed that the great number of invalid ballots tells there were many irregularities in this process.
