Serbia’s national minorities elected their representatives on Sunday, and the preliminary results showed the “Self-determination” list from Serbia's south-western region of Sandzak won elections for the Bosniak National Council (BNV), the Beta news agency reported.
Sulejman Ugljanin, the head of the Party for Democratic Action of Sandzak and former minister without portfolio in Serbia’s Government then led by now President Aleksandar Vucic, won 16 seats in the BNV, while his main contesters “Vakat je” and “Matica Bosnajcka would have 13 and six representatives respectively.
Ugljanin declared victory late on Sunday, saying he would make a coalition with the “Vakat je” party led by Sait Kacapor.
Ugljanin has earlier said he would seek Serbia and the European Union to call elections for a territorial autonomy for Sandzak region.
His party said that the turnout was 52 percent of the eligible voters.
The majority of ethnic Albanians voted for the Party for Democratic Action (PPD) led by Saip Kamberi, the head of Serbia's southern municipality of Bujanovac.
The ethnic Hungarians in Serbia voted for the Madjarska Sloga party which had the support of the Hungarian parliamentary party, the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, led by Istvan Pastor who said the turnout was 36 percent, what was “less than four years ago.”
The Madjasrka Sloga party won 30 out of 35 seats in the Hungarian national Council.
A total of 467,545 voters registered at special electoral rolls directly elected representatives of 18 minority groups, while electoral councils chose those who represented Croats, Montenegrins, Russians and Macedonians.
