The EU Delegation to Bosnia urged all political parties to refrain from polarising statements and actions aimed at distracting attention from the real issued facing the country, after the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) said they would initiate proceedings before the Constitutional Court to change the name of the Serb-dominated entity of Republika Srpska (RS), citing discrimination of non-Serbs living there.

Polarising statements and actions, including challenges to the constitutional framework of the country, will not facilitate the formation of new authorities at a crucial moment for the country’s EU path.

The EU Delegation also urged all political parties to engage constructively in the implementation of election results, in order to move ahead with much-needed reforms.

On Wednesday, the biggest Bosniak party in the country, the SDA said they would initiate proceedings before the Constitutional Court to challenge the name of the RS, citing discrimination against Bosniaks and Croats living there.

This sparked numerous reactions from local and international officials. International officials called the initiative counterproductive at a time when Bosnia still has not formed its government at the State level, and local officials, coming from the Serb-dominated entity of Republika Srpska rejected any ultimatum by the SDA and said such initiatives only make them stronger and more determined to initiate a procedure for secession of this entity from the country.
