The Flame of Peace arrived in Sarajevo on Saturday, a week before the solemn opening of the European Youth Olympic Festival 2019.
“It is my wish that a flame of peace blazes forever in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka, who took over the flame in Rome together with Istocno Sarajevo Mayor Nenad Vukovic, a city which will along with Sarajevo host this year’s festival.
The Flame of Peace first arrived in the northern city of Banja Luka and was on Saturday brought to Sarajevo, welcomed by senior state officials including the State Presidency members and head of Bosnia’s government.
It was brought by the two mayors on FlyBosnia flight from Banja Luka.
Mayor Vukovic said this manifestation would take the country back on the stage of organising big winter sports events.
It was the first time in the history of EYOF that the flame was taken over by two cities in one country.
The opening ceremony will take place on February 9 at the Olympic stadium Asim Ferhatovic-Hase in Sarajevo.
