Various Bosnian organisations from across the country will mark the International Women’s Day on Friday, showing their commitment to the battle for women’s economic, political and social equality.

Sarajevo will host a conference titled ‘Bigger steps to gender equality – a common commitment,” organised by Bosnia’s Gender Equality Organisation.

Following the conference, a women’s march and an exhibition titled ‘Peace with woman’s face’ as well as a ‘Not just today’ campaign will be held.

The said campaign is aimed at focusing on the problem of violence against women which should be in focus during all 365 days of the year and not just on March 8.

The International Women’s Day established in memory of the demonstrations of American workers in Chicago in 1909 and the New York march of more than 15,000 women who were looking for shorter working hours, better salaries and voting rights.

The holiday initiative came from a German feminist and member of the Socialist Party Clara Zetkin, and it was first marked in 1911 in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark.

In 1977, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution declaring March 8 the Day of Women’s Rights and International Peace.
