Catholic Christians in Bosnia and Herzegovina are marking Easter Day one of the most important feasts in a year.

The day comes after the Holy Week and Good Friday, and it marks the beginning of the Great Fifty Days, or Eastertide.

Masses were served in all major Catholic churches across the country.

Bosnia’s Archbishop, Cardinal Vinko Puljic said during the Easter Eve mass in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Sarajevo that the faithful came to the ceremony to recover and the faith and feed their souls.

He thanked Orthodox Archbishop Hrizostom for joining them to share the celebration of Easter with the Catholic community.

Franjo Komarica, Banja Luka Bishop, said this feast was about the victory of life, truth, justice and peace.

Besides the religious part, Easter Sunday is a day when families gather together and honour many customs and tradition including the colouring of boiled eggs and so-called ‘egg tapping’ game where players hit the other player’s eggs and the winner is the one left with the last intact egg.
