With a smile on his face, Bosnia’s Amel Tuka received on Wednesday the silver medal he won a day earlier at the 800-metre race in Doha, Qatar. It is the biggest success any Bosnian as ever achieved in athletics.

“A day has passed since I won the historic medal, but I have to admit, I am still overwhelmed. I don’t really know what I am feeling. I am very happy, I knowthat, and I am very proud of what I have achieved for myself and for Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the 28-year-old said.

He said he can hardly wait to come home on Friday.

Bosnia’s best runner won bronze at the World Championship in China in 2015.

Tuka’s grandmother, Mujesira Siladzija, told N1 about her grandson’s childhood, saying he was always fast.

“I lived in the village and he would come to me when he didn’t want to go to school. I would tell him I would call the police if he doesn’t (go to school), and he would respond that they will not be able to catch up with him,” she said.

“I often remind him of how he would say he doesn’t want to go to school. And now, look what my grandchild has achieved,” she said.

Bosnia’s Olympic Committee also awarded Tuka with 15,000 Bosnian Marks.
