Residents from several suburb local communities held peaceful protests in front of the Tuzla Canton government building, against announcements of accommodation of migrants near their homes.
“I don't think these are refugees, but migrants who entered Bosnia illegally. We heard they were coming to a local community with a Croat majority and that represents an expulsion for us. The Mayor confirmed that no migrant centre will be built in the Tuzla area,” Goran Stojak from the Bukinje local community said, adding that residents were upset by the news that migrants could be moved to the Ljubaca barracks.
“We're ready to stand in front of the barracks and prevent their entrance even if we all got arrested. That's our general position on this matter,” Drazen Vilusic, the head of the Ljubace local community said.
Tuzla Canton's Assembly and the government said earlier that they are not competent to deal with the migrant accommodation issue, because it is the exclusive competence of the State.
“We're not competent to make any decisions. This is the competence of the Security Ministry which should protect Bosnia's border. These people are in transit here and ad far as I and the Tuzla Canton government are concerned we are against any migrant centres in this canton,” Tuzla Canton Assembly Speaker Zarko Vujovic said, adding that they are only able to provide humanitarian support for migrants.
