Austrian Chancellor condemns hate speech against new minister of Bosnian origin

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz expressed full support to Alma Zadic, Austria's new Justice Minister, who has faced a wave of hate speech on social media due to her Bosnian origin.

“We will act consistently against online hate – whether from the left, Islamist or right. @Alma_Zadic & everyone else who is affected has my full support!,” Kurz tweeted on Thursday.

Following the online threats, Austrian Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counterterrorism provided three Cobra special forces agents to protect Zadic, Austrian media carried on Wednesday.

Austria's Integration Minister Susanne Raab also expressed support to the Bosnian-born minister, stressing that “there is no place to online hatred in Austria,” especially not against women.

The 35-year-old will thus be the youngest Justice Minister in the history of this country.

She escaped Tuzla in 1994, while the war was still raging in Bosnia, and fled to Austria, where the graduated law. After graduating, she went to New York to study at Columbia University.

Upon her return from the US, she worked as an attorney for seven years in Austria.

According to the Austrian daily Der Standard, Zadic's nomination for the post before the Green Party is only a formality, because she enjoys great respect from the party's top officials.
