Several thousand Muslim believers gathered in Ljubljana on Friday in the newly-constructed Islamic cultural centre, the first to be built in Slovenia after decades of requests and was built mostly with donations from abroad.

The first prayer was held in the mosque within the cultural centre. Secretary of the Islamic community in Slovenia Nevzet Poric said that some 3,000-4,000 Muslims attended the prayer and that everything was conducted in the best of order.

Today's prayer means that the mosque in Ljubljana is officially now in use, Poric said.

The Islamic cultural centre with its mosque adorned with a 40-metre minaret will be officially opened in June.

This is the first Islamic centre in Slovenia which has a Muslim population of about 50,000 who until now held prayers and other cultural activities in private premises or sports halls.
