Since the beginning of the month of Ramadan last week, Red Cross volunteers have been preparing suhoor meals before the break of dawn and iftar meals after sunset for nearly 500 fasting migrants at the newly formed Lipa camp near the city of Bihac.

Together with partner organisations and government institutions, the Red Cross in Bosnia’s northwestern Una-Sana Canton (USK) has been for three years caring for migrants that have been arriving in the canton since Bosnia and Herzegovina turned into a transit country on their path toward Western Europe.

The USK has been the area affected the most by the migrant crisis since it is located at the border with EU member Croatia. Several migrant reception centres had been set up there.

“We prepare and distribute food, clothes, hygiene products and first aid,” Red Cross USK Director, Husein Klicic, said, adding that the organisation also has mobile teams that take care of the migrants staying outside the camp.

The volunteers at Lipa go the extra mile to prepare the Ramadan meals for the migrants, as for suhoor to be served on time, work begins at 1 a.m.
